Immerse yourself in the heart of Marrakech’s vibrant medina and embark on a journey that goes far beyond a simple sculpture class, immersing you in a truly centuries-old heritage.
You will be invited to meet a maâlem who has mastered the art of Gebs sculpture.
As you contemplate your host’s works and the admirable meticulousness of the details—that rigorous order, that peaceful harmony—you immediately recognize his talent.
A maâlem is literally “one who knows,” a master of craftsmanship or art. This honorary title is given to those deemed worthy of teaching or passing on their expertise.
Your host, who learned his craft from a grand master, explains with humility that his learning knows no bounds. “I am always in search of knowledge,” he says, adding that
“This craft is a passion, an art that I must preserve.”
First, expert hands sketch the desired patterns, which often feature geometric interlacing, rosettes, muqarnas, and, of course, calligraphy.
Next, he patiently carves his sketch, digging deeper into certain areas to accentuate the shadows that will enhance the relief.
Little by little, the smooth mass of plaster becomes lace—the Gebs is born.
Your host invites you to immerse yourself in their world during your visit.
Using chisels and small carving tools, you’ll have the chance to carve the first letter of your first name—or a floral design—into your piece of Gebs, and take it home as a souvenir of this immersive experience.
