Pamukkale truly shines at sunset not just for the golden light, but because the crowds thin out significantly. This quieter time allows you to properly appreciate both the archaeological site and the terraces without queues of visitors waiting for photos. The ancient theater at dusk is absolutely worth the climb, as are the other excavations.

While many of the famed travertine pools were dry and less brilliantly white than anticipated, the most impressive views can be found by carefully following the water's path downhill (watch your step the limestone is quite slippery!).Bring your swimsuit! The on site Cleopatra Pool offers a unique chance to swim in thermal waters among submerged Roman ruins.
