About This Activity

On this full-day tour, you'll step back in time to explore the incredible Byzantine and Ottoman influences that have shaped Istanbul, a city bridging two continents and countless centuries of history. Your day begins with a visit to the Hagia Sophia, once the world's largest cathedral, which showcases stunning Byzantine architecture and mosaics. Its history as a church, mosque, and museum will captivate you as you wander through its massive halls, taking in the serene atmosphere and impressive artworks. From there, you’ll head to the Blue Mosque, a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. With its six minarets and intricate blue tiles, it’s one of the most recognized symbols of Istanbul and a must-see for anyone visiting the city.

Your tour continues to the Topkapi Palace, the former residence of Ottoman sultans, where you can explore the opulent rooms, lavish courtyards, and the famous Harem, where the royal women lived in seclusion. This palace gives you a glimpse into the grandeur of Ottoman life and is home to valuable relics, including the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker’s Diamond. The day also includes a visit to the Basilica Cistern, an underground marvel from the Byzantine period, where you can walk among majestic columns that rise from the depths of the earth.

Not only will you visit major landmarks, but this tour also takes you to lesser-known gems that are equally remarkable. A stop at the Hippodrome of Constantinople, now a large public square, lets you walk in the footsteps of ancient chariot races, with remnants of Egyptian obelisks and the Serpent Column standing proudly in the open air. The Grand Bazaar—one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world—invites you to explore a maze of shops selling everything from jewelry to carpets. This vibrant market provides a perfect blend of history and culture, where centuries-old traditions meet modern-day commerce.

This comprehensive tour is designed for travelers who want a deep understanding of Istanbul’s fascinating history and culture. The professional guides, who are experts in both Byzantine and Ottoman history, will bring each stop to life with detailed stories, legends, and fascinating facts. The small group setting ensures a personal experience, where you can ask questions and engage in discussions about the places you're visiting. The pace of the tour is designed to be enjoyable for both families and adult travelers, with ample time to explore each site without feeling rushed.

One of the best aspects of this tour is the convenience of having everything arranged for you. Forget about the stress of navigating public transportation or figuring out directions—everything from your transportation to your entrance tickets is taken care of. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in central Istanbul and whisked away in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. It was a truly engaging experience, made even better by our guide who spoke flawless French and explained everything so clearly.

Our guide arrived more than an hour late, which was frustrating. However, we did manage to skip the long queues at both the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, which was a definite plus. He took us to a lovely spot for lunch that served traditional Turkish dishes. We also visited a carpet and leather demonstration and had some free time at the Grand Bazaar. On a positive note, the guide was very knowledgeable about the landmarks we did visit.

Overall, a very good experience, though many sites were under restoration. Still, our guide was excellent and made the visit worthwhile.
