About This Activity

Your tour begins in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a lively district known for its narrow streets, ancient houses, and bustling markets. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll explore hidden alleys and popular street food spots. The first stop introduces you to banh mi, a Vietnamese baguette sandwich packed with savory fillings. As you bite into the crispy bread, your guide will explain its origins and why it’s a favorite among locals.

Next, you’ll visit a vendor offering pho, Vietnam’s world-famous noodle soup. Choose between beef or chicken, and enjoy the rich, aromatic broth accompanied by fresh herbs. Throughout the tour, your guide will share interesting stories about Hanoi’s food culture, making each bite a deeper experience.

Continue your culinary journey with tastings of fresh and fried spring rolls, served with tangy dipping sauces. Try local delicacies like bun cha, grilled pork with rice noodles, and egg coffee, a sweet and creamy drink unique to Hanoi. For those with a sweet tooth, the tour includes a traditional Vietnamese dessert, such as che, a refreshing sweet soup made with various fruits and beans.

This immersive experience not only satisfies your taste buds but also provides insights into Hanoi’s daily life. The bustling atmosphere, mouth-watering aromas, and vibrant street scenes make this tour a feast for all senses.

After indulging in Hanoi’s street food, the evening continues with a visit to a theater for a traditional water puppet show. This ancient art form dates back over a thousand years and is a unique aspect of Vietnamese culture. Performed in a waist-deep pool, the puppets seem to dance on water, depicting stories of rural life, legends, and folk tales.

Accompanied by live music and traditional instruments, the show offers a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s history and artistic heritage. Your guide will provide context before the performance, helping you appreciate the cultural significance of this unique art form.

Excellent food in large portions! We tried many different types of Vietnamese dishes at various locations and were very well taken care of by a friendly, English-speaking local guide. We even took a scooter ride with the guide to get to the water puppet theatre, which was a safe and fun little drive.

We visited four authentic spots, and at the fourth location, a dessert was even brought to our table. I am deducting one star because the tour lasted only 3.5 hours instead of the advertised 4.5 hours, and the guide provided very little explanation throughout the tour.

Great tour that I would definitely recommend. We chose the 4 PM tour and started with the 4:10 PM water puppet show at Thang Long Puppet Theatre. We brought the audio guide as well, which provided summaries of each story, though we had to sit down as the show was starting. Lyna was our guide for the food tour—a local with excellent recommendations along the streets in addition to the stops we made. She shared a lot of knowledge throughout the tour, both proactively and in response to questions from the group.

Charlotte Williams from the UK: Annie was extremely knowledgeable and responded to all our questions. She also ensured we arrived at the theatre with plenty of time to spare.
