About This Activity

Embark on a transformative 3-day journey from Marrakech to Fes, blending Morocco's rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. This tour takes you through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, the historical Road of the Kasbahs, and the enchanting Erg Chebbi desert dunes, offering a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

On Day 1, the adventure begins as you depart Marrakech and ascend the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains. The journey through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, at an altitude of 2,260 meters, offers breathtaking views of lush valleys and rugged peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass charming Berber villages and cascading waterfalls that reflect the natural beauty of the region. The first major stop is at the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historic architecture and appearances in iconic films like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Here, you’ll have time to explore the ancient alleys and learn about its fascinating history before enjoying a traditional Moroccan lunch.

Continuing the journey, you’ll pass through the bustling town of Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Desert,” before heading into the scenic Valley of Roses. As the day comes to a close, you’ll reach the captivating Dades Gorges, where the golden hues of sunset create a magical atmosphere. Dinner and an overnight stay at a charming local hotel provide the perfect end to a spectacular day.

Day 2 begins with breakfast and a morning stroll through the towering cliffs of the Todra Gorges, a natural wonder famed for its dramatic rock formations and clear streams. From there, you’ll follow the legendary Road of the 1000 Kasbahs, passing through Tineghir and Rissani, the birthplace of the Alaouite Dynasty. In Rissani, you’ll explore a vibrant traditional market, a cultural hub where locals trade spices, textiles, and crafts.

As you approach Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi Dunes, excitement builds. You’ll trade your car for a camel and embark on a serene ride through the golden sands, arriving at a traditional Berber desert camp just in time for sunset. Under a sky illuminated by millions of stars, enjoy a delicious dinner, local music, and an authentic cultural experience. Fall asleep in a cozy Berber tent, surrounded by the tranquil desert.

On Day 3, an early wake-up call rewards you with the mesmerizing sight of the sunrise over the dunes, a moment of pure serenity. After breakfast and a refreshing shower, the journey continues through the lush Ziz Valley, dotted with palm groves and ancient villages. You’ll stop in Midelt for lunch, a charming town known for its apple orchards, before traveling through cedar forests and the picturesque Middle Atlas Mountains. Keep an eye out for the playful Barbary macaques along the way! By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Fes, the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure.

Every aspect of the trip surpassed my expectations. Our driver, Hassan, was exceptionally friendly and professional. He collected us from our hotel promptly and also dropped us off at our hotel in Fez at the end. He was tremendously helpful and very flexible throughout the journey. The vehicle was comfortable, and we were fortunate to have what felt like a private tour since no other travelers had booked for our dates. The hotel was very pleasant and clean. The scenery along the route was breathtaking, and Hassan took us to authentic local restaurants for our lunches. The absolute highlight was witnessing the desert sunset while riding a camel; it was simply unforgettable. While it is a very long drive, I personally loved it and am accustomed to this style of travel. The desert camp was also clean and we had a private bathroom. A word of advice: it can get very cold at night (we traveled in February), so be sure to pack warm clothing.

Salem was an exceptional guide! Because of him, we experienced far more of Morocco than we had anticipated. The drives between Marrakech and Merzouga, and then Merzouga and Fes, are quite lengthy. However, the stunning landscapes and sites you pass by help the time go by pleasantly. The desert segment of the journey was truly incredible and is an absolute must for anyone visiting Morocco. My only regret is that we didn't spend an additional day in the desert to better balance out the time spent in the vehicle.

Our three-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fez with Hachim was a wonderful experience. He did an excellent job of introducing us to Morocco and its culture, and he consistently secured the best rooms and meals for our group. The day we spent in the desert, in particular, was truly exceptional.
