About This Activity

The south-eastern region of Serbia is rich in history and mystery, with Niš at its heart. This city, known as the "city on a crossroads," has been an important military, economic, and cultural center for centuries. Positioned on the banks of the Nišava River, it played a crucial role in various empires, including the Celts, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottoman Empire. Niš grew into a city of great strategic importance, which laid the foundation for its vibrant culture.

Niš is also the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor who legalized Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. A key stop on this tour is the Niš Fortress, which stands proudly along the Nišava River. Built during the Ottoman period, this fortress showcases remarkable Ottoman military architecture and has served as a symbol of strength and defense for centuries.

Another poignant location is the Skull Tower, a monument to the Battle of Čegar, where Serbian forces fought against the Ottomans for their freedom. This monument is a testament to the courage and sacrifices made by Serbs during their fight for liberty. The Bubanj Memorial Park and Red Cross Concentration Camp also reveal the tragic stories of World War II, providing a sobering reflection on the region’s complex history.

A unique aspect of Niš is its old Caldron Street, which once teemed with craft workshops. Here, you can experience the authentic way to drink Balkan coffee and learn about the concept of "merak"—a term that refers to enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Niš is also the birthplace of burek, a beloved pastry, and you’ll have the chance to try a traditional meat burek in the city where it was first made in the 16th century.

This tour offers an in-depth look at Niš’s history, culture, and cuisine. From ancient fortifications to poignant memorials and flavorful local dishes, it’s a journey through the heart of Serbia’s rich heritage. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a foodie, or simply curious about this fascinating region, this tour offers a comprehensive and unforgettable experience of Niš.

We had an amazing trip to Niš with Novi! The drive was safe, and the guide had extensive knowledge about the history and the places we visited. We brought our two young kids—although the sites weren’t particularly aimed at children, they really liked Novi and enjoyed the day too! We highly recommend both Novi and this tour.
